Description of Capo dei Capi dice game

It is prohibition era in New York City. Rival gangs of mobsters use their influence to bribe politicians, run casinos, bootleg liquor, and gain the favor of corrupt policemen. In Capo dei Capi, players compete to decide who will be the "boss of all bosses."

Capo dei Capi is a 2-player dice game that requires players to "push their luck" each turn as they make tactical area control decisions. It is designed to be a very quick filler game (~15 minutes) that still demands skillful and crafty decisions. Yet, because dice rolls are unpredictable, players must be prepared to adapt and change their plans at the drop of a die.

The basic premise is that you are a gangster seeking control over six areas (see picture below). In addition, you also try to extort the mayor to gain additional power. There is a card for each of the six areas, upon which "influence" and "bribe" tokens are placed. On his turn, a player rolls dice which determines the player's options for placing these tokens. Also, the different areas' values change during the game as "value cubes" are placed in accordance with certain dice rolls. As players roll the dice each turn, they may increase their influence in certain areas, but they also increase their chances of "busting" and losing the gains they just made. Thus, a major decision to be made each turn is deciding when to stop.

In addition, when you "extort the mayor", you gain mayor chips that can be used to perform special actions. Most of the tactical and interesting decisions of the game are made with Mayor Chips. For example, with the use of a Mayor Chip, you can shift influence from one area to another or you can force the other player to re-roll the dice or you can pay off the "hit man" who threatens to end your turn early. However, the chips are limited and you need to constantly analyzed whether a particular chip action should be performed now or saved for later. Thus, a second major decision to make each turn is whether to perform these special actions or not. Although it is a dice game, the mayor chips add a level of control over the dice (yet, it is still a dice game!) and so players must carefully choose the right time to use them.
